North Kawartha Residents will use Duro-Dummer
Transfer Site
Council approved a $3,000 cost to apply to the Ministry of the Environment for permission to use the Hall’s Glen transfer site in Duro-Dummer. This will benefit the residents located in the south end of North Kawartha and was discussed at a joint meeting of Duro-Dummer and North Kawartha councils a few months ago. Residents will be advised on how to use the site after permission is received. 2003 Budget Surplus

Balmer Road Fire Station
- Not!
By Neil Currie
It became apparent at the public meeting with North Kawartha
Council Saturday, May 29, that residents served by Balmer Rd. are not aware
that there is no recognized fire station on Balmer Rd., that there has
not been a fire station there for some years and that there will not be a
station there in the future. Several residents at the meeting asked council not to close the "station" despite the fact that there is no station there - which has been stated in print a number of times. Council did not have the courage to tell those appealing that there was no station to keep open, but sat appearing sympathetic. Neither this council nor the previous council has directly, clearly and unequivocally informed residents of the situation, even though the fire chief has warned council that the township is leaving itself open to lawsuits by allowing this misunderstanding to persist. Council surely owes this to residents served by Balmer Rd. and to all township taxpayers who would have to pay for a lawsuit. Council has talked around the situation in cautious, even timid terms. Councillor Barry Rand did his best to explain ramifications but kept within the limits observed by council as a whole. Council has had studies carried out by the township's Fire Service, by the Fire Underwriters Survey, by the Fire Chief, by the
Fire Marshal's Fire Advisor, by the Fire Underwriters' Survey, by the Senior
Public Fire Protection Specialist and by the Ministry of Labour and appears
always ready to release the findings at the next meeting but never comes
to grips with it. Residents have been left dangling. The fire chief has stated that he has very good use for the building that is at 983 Balmer Rd. as another bay that is needed at an existing station. Used in this way, the building would add to the township's fire protection including for Balmer Rd. The building and an obsolete fire truck were placed at 983 Balmer Rd. before township amalgamation but the fire chief has stated that it has never responded to a fire. |
