Victoria Day Weekend Report On Sunday evening, May 18, there was a gathering of teens at a cottage located on Bluebird Lane, Chandos Lake in North Kawartha Township. Around 3 a.m., three of the teens decided to leave the party and canoe to a nearby island. In the canoe were Adam Ryan, Jennifer Robichaud and Catherine Jaster. About 500 metres into their journey, two of the occupants of the canoe were switching positions when the canoe capsized into the lake. While lifejackets were in the canoe, none of the persons were wearing them. Their calls for help alerted a cottager, 52 year old Paul Rooney. He attended their location and pulled the exhausted trio to safety. All three were treated for hypothermia at Rooney's cottage. This investigation is continuing. Alcohol consumption was a contributing
factor in what nearly became a drowning investigation. Investigators
learned that perhaps had another minute elapsed, one of the three teens,
Adam Smith would have been lost to depths of the lake. The worst case scenario,
perhaps all three might have drowned.
