Conflicts are Dysfunctional
by Roy Allen Conflict is an inherent part of any group, organization,
or party.. Conflicts are dysfunctional and we should not let them grow
out of proportion. It is managements responsibility to keep intensity
as low as humanly possible. Managers who accept and stimulate conflicts
and do not stem aggression will not survive in the profession, because conflict
is destructive and negative behaviour. To verbally attack with disrespect
or profanity is a major dysfunctional problem. It is demeaning to one's
character and organizational status. This has and will continue to reduce
opportunities for advancement in groups, organizations, and parties.
This should never happen.
YOUR HEALTH----YOUR COMMUNITY by Cal Taillefer As we move into the dead of winter, I would like to say a special thanks to those individuals who have remembered our Medical Centre campaign by diverting birthday and even Christmas gifts our way. Of course, we encourage others to also consider this type of gift. Speaking of gifts, have you had the chance to drop into our new building? Although the Open House has come and gone, you would be most welcome to stop by and have a look. This would also give you a chance to meet our nurse practitioner, Jeanne, who is also truly a gift for our community. In passing, I would also like to thank the Chandos Lake Cottage Association for their donation, as well as the Jack Lake endeavor to Honour Stan and Doris Perrin---doing well!! Once again the Apsley Women's' Institute has been able to put together another donation---a small group of ladies with big hearts. As we move into our final phase, we see more businesses coming on board and at this point we thank Chandos Plumbing and Marks Work Wearhouse. Please spread the word and if you know of someone who is thinking but hesitating, please encourage them. We are fortunate to have such a facility! The Apsley Lions

HAVE YOU
MET AN ANGEL TO-DAY? by Doug Young The phone call came in the morning of May 31,2005. We have a bed for Douglas Young at the Princess Margaret Hospital. Much later, as I was settling in, a pleasant looking nurse, with a big smile appeared in the doorway. She wore the old style white uniform. “Hi”, she said, 'my name is Margaret and I’m going to be your nurse while you are here' She extended her hand and when our hands touched I had a strange sense of well-being and an instant bonding. I've just met an Angel. June 1st , started my chemotherapy. Dr. Ken Peckham was my case doctor. Another ANGEL. On my 2nd day I was taken to T.G.H. to have a Hickman line installed in my chest for receiving treatment and various blood products without punching a hole in you every time. Very useful. On my 3rd day they moved me to the room next door with a beautiful view. A tall, smiling man walked through the door, "Hi, I'm Nick, you have my bed" Bewildered, I was most apologetic and offered to change. He would not hear of it and explained that this was his third time in this room and his third re-occurrence of Leukemia. We immediately became friends. Another Angel He had a positive and happy outlook which made time pass quickly. We did a lot of joking, laughing and walking together. I think the nurses liked to visit our room for that reason. One of the main concerns facing patients and spouses is accommodations. There are several options for spouses so far from home, motel, Princess Margaret Lodge, friends etc. In our case we had a friend Louise (another Angel) in Stouffville. From there Marie could take GO transit to the hospital which worked well. In early June two more Angels appeared in the form of Jane and Jock . Marie knew Jane from the sewing group but I had not met either of them. Jane announced to Marie that they had a condo at Sheppard and Yonge they were not using at the time. Would we like to use it? Talk about heaven sent help. Transportation became a problem as I was not allowed to drive during therapy and Marie doesn't drive in Toronto. Enter another group of Angels our children, Mike and Jennifer, and Marie’s brother and wife Bob and Wilda, and I drove when I was able. Countless other groups offered priceless support, Ladies Sewing Circle, Glen AIda Seniors, Apsley Legion and many other friends and neighbors. Last & certainly not least was the Cancer Society in Peterborough. and TO. It would be difficult to imagine our situation without their devoted help. Get Well Cards really do make a difference. As I approach wellness again I would like to thank all other wonderful Angels for their support. Without them the whole ordeal would have been unbearable. Last and most important was the support and love of my Angel for the last 50 years, Marie. Fran Halstead and family would like to thank our friends and neighbours for their prayers, cards, gifts and hugs during Fran's illness. Special thanks to Doc Rayes for his care and concern. |
