Activities Galore!
Do not let the ‘February Blues’ get a hold of you. I maintain that the busier you are, the faster time goes. Therefore, if you are not a fan of winter, come join one of the community activities. Get involved. Our programs need you! Get your Sweetheart and bring her/him to the Valentines Dance on Feb 11 at the Apsley Community Centre. This is a dinner and dance put on by the Apsley Lions Club as a fundraiser for the Apsley Medical Centre. Watch for details. The Apsley Lions Club annual hockey tournament takes place on Feb 18th at the arena. Come out and enjoy some quality hockey. The Annual Winterfest and Trappers Carnival will be held March 4th at the Apsley Community Centre. This is lots of fun for the whole family. Watch for details or call Jim Thompson @ 656-3820 for more info. Mark March 19th on your calendar as The Apsley Skating Club will be holding their Annual Skating Carnival. You may see the next Olympic Champion. The Annual Apsley Bulls hockey tournament will be held on March 11th and 12th this year. There will be Public Skating held daily from 12-2pm through the March Break excluding Friday. Friday Public Skating will be 7:30 - 9:30pm. WINTER VISITORS Naturalists predicted in October that the poor crop of Mountain Ash berries, growing north and east of Lake Superior to Quebec, would force Pine Grosbeaks and Bohemian Waxwings south – and they were correct. Both species began arriving in November – small flocks of Pine Grosbeaks; Bohemian Waxwings reaching peaks of 400-500 seen at Horlings Garden Centre south of Lakefield through December. The Peterborough Christmas Bird Count was above average for both species: 103 Grosbeaks (30 average); 336 Waxwings (312 average) and both were recorded on the Petroglyph Count held January 4. Pine Grosbeak males are easily identified: a robin-sized, rosy-pink bird. The females are dull gray. They eat fruit and seeds of Mountain Ash, Cedar, Flowering Crab, Highbush Cranberry, Cranberries, Sunflower seeds, sliced apples, tree buds and nuts. They are quite tame and have been known to eat from the hand. Alex Macdonald, near the Apsley northern exit to #28, invited us to see them on his property a few years ago – a beautiful sight. Look for them sitting virtually motionless and silent while feeding in a tree. In flight, notice their roller-coaster movement, accompanied by a trilling whistle. For Bohemian Waxwings, larger than Cedar Waxwings and often with them, look for a sleek, crested, black-masked bird with conspicuous white wing-patches, rusty (not white) under the tail and a gray belly, unlike the yellow belly of the Cedar. They, too, eat fruits and berries such as Mountain Ash and sometimes enjoy raisins, currants and chopped apple, each bird seeming to politely make sure that all get a fair share. |
