Local News: Apsley Youth, Polar Fest and the Fire Fly Band
The Youth Voice

by Lauren West and Annabelle James

After a very busy 2005 the North Kawartha Youth Committee took a well deserved break for the month of January.  Looking ahead in 06’, the committee will be holding their second annual spring clean up of the Village and BBQ fundraiser sometime in May. Keep your eyes open for those lovely neon orange vests and feel free to come on out and give the youth committee members a hand.

On behalf of the Youth Committee we would like to thank everyone who helped make 2005 the success it was.  Be sure to keep reading our column as it will keep you updated on our upcoming events.  If you wish to help out the Youth Committee or have them lend a hand in your next fundraising event you can contact them at apsleyouth@kawarthanorth.org.

Our Mission is to Promote Youth involvement within the Community

Come Play With Us !!

by Janice & Chuck Griffith

Shown below is Sandy Zimmerman conducting the Fire Fly Band at a recent concert in Apsley. The band was formed in February 2003 and is composed of residents of North Kawartha. It is under the direction of Dr. Sandy Zimmerman with original arrangements by Joe Mac Nab. Band practices are held on Monday evenings and individual lessons are available during the week. No previous experience or an instrument is necessary and currently the band is looking for new members.  The band is composed of members who have little or no musical background but also includes three members who play with the Peterborough Symphony. Musical selections range from Broadway tunes to Christmas music to original arrangements of Big Band selections.

That’s Apsley for Yah!!

by Lauren West & Baylea Miller

Out in the middle of no-where,
Yah there’s a place way down there
Really, Oh what? Where, What’s it called?
"It’s Apsley!"

 We don’t have many people
We don’t have many stores,
Just a bunch of bratty kids
Who hate to do their chores,
There’s not much to do
In this itty bitty town,
But the people "oh" so friendly
You’d never get a frown

What’s it called-Uh Break it down now…
It’s Apsley, Oh Oh, Apsley, It’s Apsley!

Where Apsleans NOT Aliens,
We are people too
Don’t look at us Don’t laugh at us,
Your not better than us few
So when you turn that corner
and see that Apsley sign
Don’t worry about speeding,
You won’t get a fine,
All we have is an O.P.P.
And they’re gone half the time

So pump it,
Pump Pump some gas,
At our local Shell,
You’ll meet great people like Charlie
He ‘s funny as hell

So Buy,
Buy Buy some beer,
At the L to the C B O,
Head down to the legion,
Party here we go,

So now you know the Apsley way
We live it every day
So get used to it,
And how about you sing along with us and say
A woooohooo awe, Play sumthin’ country
I said…
A woooohooo awe, Play sumthin’ country
