The service began with choir members entering the sanctuary holding a candle and proceeding to their places. Much of the evening was dedicated to singing carols and beautiful anthems by the choir under the direction of Marie Watson. Rev. Don Green told the interesting story of how Jesus' family dealt with His Divinity and the dying days of Mary, His mother. Communion was then served and the evening concluded with the humming of Silent Night. This was done by candle light and musical accompaniment by Don on the guitar. GREAT GRAY OWLS by June Hitchcox
Flocks of hundreds of Redpolls, 22 Robins and 60 Bohemian Waxwings have been
reported in January but the really big news this particular winter is the
influx of a rather rare and irregular visitor from north of Lake Superior
to Hudson Bay - Great Gray Owls. On January 9, over 33 birders divided
portions of Peterborough County to count Great Grays and were amazed to find
83 and they know that there were many that they missed. The last big
year was 1979 when 34 were recorded in the County. Great Grays will hunt during the daylight hours on overcast days. They are our largest owl - 24" to 33" long with a wingspan of 60". They are quite tame, allowing people to come close to them. Look for the distinctive shape of owls: large heads that appear to have no neck. Great Grays hunt meadow mice and can be seen in open fields using low trees, posts etc. as lookouts. They resemble Barred Owls but are much larger, are greyish and have yellow eyes. Their voice is a repetition of evenly-spaced "hoos", each lower in pitch from the last. In the past, they have been seen here between November and Mid March. Happy Hunting!
