Storm the Trent
in
 North Kawartha

On the weekend of Oct 2/3, the final "Storm the Trent" biker adventure race was held in Apsley/Jack Lake.  This highly successful race (returning next year Oct 1/2) featured the TREK-10 km paddle, 35 km mountain bike, 9 km run--on the Saturday.  During the first 20 km stage and being a road biker, I felt like a Kamikaze rider, battling the rocks, hills and mud.  At a remote check point, the bikes were dropped and the downpour and the run began.  Returning to the bike, Can. Shield and impossible sand were faced.  Finally the marina was reached.

runner Because of the high winds, my kayak/water section was shortened to 3 km, followed by 5 more km on the bike.  Thank goodness for a hot shower at the cottage.  The next day, I paired with my 13 year old son, Ryan, to compete in the shorter HIKE course--8 km paddle, 24 km bike, 5 km run.  The canoe portion started first, followed by 10 km on the bike to the run section.  Back on the bike, I was glad this was a tamer version of the TREK. By the time we reached the road, there was only 6 km left and the adrenalin was flowing.  Out of 45 Pairs, no distinction was made for age, or sex, we finished 11th.  Not bad for the youngest competitor and his not so young Mom!!!

Changing of the Guard at the Lifelong Learning Centre
Management Board

After many years of dedicated service Sandy Zimmerman has passed on the chairperson torch to Jim Dudley.  “Thank you” does not suffice for the time and energy Sandy has put into the Learning Centre—and she has agreed to be secretary/treasurer until spring!  The Learning Centre’s loss is the Canoe Museum’s gain as Janice Griffith resigns from the board.  Janice was instrumental in bringing Internet access to our community and has worked tirelessly in support of the Library and Learning Centre—she has generously promised to continue her support when possible.  We also welcomed two new board members in December of 2004:  Shannon Harper and Caroline Elder.
