My Capital Experience
by Christine Everett It was a rainy day, near the end of October. Three teenagers were traveling to Ottawa with their MP, Barry Devolin. They were discussing what they were planning on going through school to be, and what school's they were planning on attending. I was very privileged to be able to attend this trip, and to ride with Barry to Ottawa. For the next three days, I got to meet some very interesting people, and make some good friends, as well as see old friends. On the Sunday of our arrival, we did a tour of the House of Commons. We visited the Peace Tower, the Chamber, and the Senate Chamber, it was interesting to see the inside of the Parliament buildings. That night, the group took a driving tour of Sussex Drive. On Monday, we visited Amnesty International. We did a tour of the building, and learned about how this very important organization operates. Next, we went to the South Korean Embassy. We met with the Ambassador, and he told us how he became an Ambassador and gave us some insight on international dealings. After lunch, we visited CHUM T.V. and radio to see how television and radio news programs are put together. On Tuesday, we met with Jenni Byrne. She talked to us about politics, and what she does in the field. Next, we met with a journalist from the National Press Galley. He told us about his adventures in news reporting. We then headed over to Tim Powers, who is a lobbyist and he educated us on what a lobbyist is. He bought us pizza, tons and tons of pizza. After that, we headed over to Question Period. Question Period is when anyone in Parliament can ask questions toward the government it was an interesting experience. And thus ends my Capital Experience. I'd like to thank Barry Devolin for presenting me with this awesome trip, and the Apsley Lion's for sponsoring me to go. It was a lot of fun, and a worth while trip, and I highly recommend it to another youth for next year. Haliburton - Kawartha Lakes - Brock

Shamus Allen of Apsley received his wings on August 26, 2005 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. His interest in flying was first sparked when he learned the basics of flight at the age of 9 and had his first airplane ride in a Cessna 152. From there, his goal of being a fighter pilot slowly took shape. He was in the Royal Air Cadets and also underwent intensive training in Karate and Jiu Jitsu, which he eventually instructed. Shamus was accepted into the Royal Military College of Canada, where he completed four years, graduating in 2004 with a Baccalaureate in Mechanical Engineering. He left for PhaseIIA to fly the Harvard II. Finishing two months ahead of schedule, he received his dream selection of jet training early. Finishing Phase IIB, he went to Dragon Flight for Phase III to fly the Hawk 115. He is now stationed in Cold Lake, Alberta to further his flight training on the Hawk. Congratulations come from his parents Jim and Sharon, his sisters Tara, Shannon, and Jamie, and also from his godfather Uncle Tom from Vancouver.
A Proud Canadian A Proud Veteran Roy was born in 1920. In 1939 he was one of the first Canadians to join the military to fight for our country in WWII. Roy began in the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve (RCNVR) receiving his first medal for that distinguished contribution. By the time he left the Navy in July 1945 he had been promoted to petty officer. After serving as a seaman for a short time, he was reassigned as a gunner on merchant ships which was a very dangerous posting. Gunners on private vessels were illegal under international law and so he was secretly disguised as a deck hand to protect his safety as merchant ships were often the target of enemy attacks to prevent the flow of supplies to our troops in Europe. As an illegal combatant Roy would have been executed on the spot if discovered. For his participation in the Atlantic struggle Roy was given the Atlantic Star medal. After that Roy was reassigned to the Indian Ocean, and for that service he was honoured with the Burma Star. Today, Roy is a widower who lives in an isolated community without the benefit of family close by. He cannot walk without the assistance of a cane or walker and arthritis has crippled his once strong hands, making it difficult for Roy to prepare his own meals. Thanks to United Way funded services, Roy receives “Meals on Wheels” and friendly visits from Community Care. These services help this War Veteran live with dignity in his own home.
