SNOWY OWLS Cold weather brings more birds from the north to spend the winter in our area. Although rather rare, a few Snowy Owls from the Arctic are seen every year. Larger irruptions occur in cycles, on average every 4 years, contingent on the number of Artic lemmings, their staple food. Lemming populations increase to the point that there are too many for their available food and enormous numbers die off, forcing the Owls to migrate south to avoid starvation. Snowy Owls are about 24” long, with yellow eyes and have rounded heads, unlike the Great Horned Owl with its ear tufts. They are white with flecks of blackish spots – adult males being almost pure white. Cold is no problem with feathers to the tip of their toes and the black bill almost hidden in the warm feathers of the face. They hunt mainly during the day, in open country, flying with long deliberate downward strokes followed by quick, jerky upward strokes, interspersed with short glides. When perched, they are easily seen, again in open places, near the ground, on fence posts, haystacks or the like. We saw one a few years back on a stump in a marshy area in the Petroglyphs and one spent the winter in fields south of Apsley along #28. Once a Snowy finds an area with plenty of food such as Meadow Voles, it will stay until it migrates north in the Spring. |
