North Kawartha Medical Centre
on the Cutting Edge of New Technology

On Tuesday Nov. 8th, the North Network welcomed Havelock, Keene, and Apsley to Teleprimary Care.

The Teleprimary Care Project links doctors, nurse practitioners, and their patients with collaborating physicians and other members of interdisciplinary health care teams using live, two-way television and peripheral medical devices. This unique project brings health care closer to home for 17 rural communities in Ontario.  North Network is one of the busiest and most comprehensive telemedicine programs in the world, connecting patients and health professionals in more than 190 urban and remote sites across Ontario. A membership-based, not-for-profit program, North Network offers technical and operational services to more than 100 member organizations.

North Kawartha is pleased to have this high tech service in the newly renovated Health Centre in Apsley” said Reeve Jim Whelan.  “We would like to thank Dr. Humphries of the Peterborough County City Health Unit for his support, the Ministry of Health for the funding, and North Network for installation and training.

Apsley is part of the “Eastern Cluster” which links nurse practitioners in Keene and Havelock with physicians in Peterborough and Dr. Rayes in Apsley.

Break-In Alert

by Barry Rand

Fellow Residents be Alert:  Recently, there have been several break-ins in North Kawartha.  Fire Routes 85D &85E are off McCoy Bay Rd, and Fire Route 45A is off Coon Lake Rd - each location is quite a distance from the main road.  It isn't known when the break-ins occurred, since the dates are when the incidents are reported.  North Kawartha Community Policing Committee is considering establishing a "Cottage Watch" program, where neighbours keep an eye on events and vehicles in their areas, and inform the OPP or NKCPC if they suspect anything.  If you believe that this kind of program would be useful, please let me know, or send an e-mail to NKCPC apsleyeso@kawarthanorth.org).

The Youth Voice

by Lauren West and Anabelle James

This is an update on your Youth Committee’s previous and upcoming events. Recently the committee organized a dinner theatre for Storm the Trent and welcomed both Storm the Trent competitors and many community member who were up for a night of good food and entertainment. It was a very successful event and thanks to everyone who helped make this a great event. On December first the youth committee will be participating with the Learning Centre for their Christmas Workshop and will be setting up a children’s craft table at the Community Centre. Be sure to bring your kids out for a fun night of creativity. Also on the agenda we have a Christmas Youth Variety night coming up on December 10th. This is a chance for the talented youth in the area to strut their stuff. Come out and show your support for this group of talented youths. It will be a blast. Looking ahead a season, when the snow is melting the committee will be holding their second annual spring clean up of the Village. Keep your eyes open for our lovely neon orange vests and feel free to come on out and give the youth committee members a hand. The date for this will be announced at a later time. Be sure to keep reading our column as it will keep you updated on our upcoming events.  If you wish to help out the Youth Committee or have them lend a hand in your next fundraising event you can contact them at apsleyouth@kawarthanorth.org.
