In today’s technological-based society it is no big surprise to see that Santa Claus has his own online newsletter and web site packed with tons of Christmas goodies from “Santa’s Workshoppe” where you can find instructions on making various Christmas crafts, to Christmas games, naughty or nice lists, the “Story Room” and even a direct link for kiddies to e-mail their letter to Santa this year instead of the traditional snail-mail method.

But don’t take our word for it; check it out for yourself. Go to www.northpoletimes.com for all your online Christmas activities.

Apsley Lions Club

The Lions members are pleased to sponsor the Apsley Christmas Parade on December 5th at 2:00 PM  This has been a great community event in the past and we hope everyone will lend their support again this year.  We plan to have the bands again this year, with the Havelock Pipe and Drum Marching Band sponsored by Wellington Street Images and the Apsley Lions sponsoring the Peterborough Shriners Band.  That is - if all goes well with decorated fir weather, health and stamina of the groups.  We urge everyone to take part either as a participant or as a spectator.

The Giant Christmas Tree at the Municipal office will be erected and the lights will shine with the Christmas spirit on December 4th at 7:00 PM.  Please join us for the carol singing, hot chocolate and cookies.

The Lions members want to thank everyone for their tremendous support during the past year.

We Wish Everyone A
Safe & Happy Holiday Season!!!

North Kawartha Community
Policing Committee

What is Community Policing?
To answer that question, we should first look at Traditional Policing, which was primarily reactive.  Something happened, the phone rang, and the police responded.
Community Policing begins a lot sooner. It acknowledges that the community is a stakeholder in our overall well-being, and is prepared to work with the OPP to identify and resolve community issues.
Community Policing does not include the enforcement and reactive response - that is still the OPP force’s job.

What Does NKCPC Do?
NKCPC is currently supporting these activities:
  • Meet monthly with OPP liaison to identify concerns
  • Access OPP reports and distribute to the community (web-sites, Apsley Voice, etc)
  • Staff the NKCPC office in Apsley (open times depend on volunteer availability)
  • Issue burning permits (esp. on weekends)
  • Support community events (DARE, parades, dances)
  • Develop phone and E-mail networks to receive and distribute information

What Do NKCPC Volunteers Do?
Once volunteers complete their training and pass the security check, they are sworn in and receive their identification badge.  Their primary duty is to staff the office, taking phone calls and receiving visits from the public. They answer questions and complete incident reports to the OPP based on the public input.
Executive committee members run the monthly public meetings with the OPP liaison, where issues are identified and local plans are developed to deal with trends.  Each committee member also has responsibility for individual programs.

What Else Can Be Done?
If we have more volunteers, we can expand our programs and our geographical effectiveness.  We can broaden the Neighbourhood Watch concept to our lakes, via our Lake Associations.  We can be a key part in Youth Development programs.  We can assist the public accessing social programs and cutting through red tape.

How to Volunteer?
Phone the Apsley office.  Talk to a volunteer or leave a message (656-4431), or
Send an E-mail.  You can use council@northkawartha.on.ca, attention Barry Rand.
