No Child Left Behind

child reading

At the Learning Centre, this is not a political slogan or a contoversial educational programme, but a community goal to be actively persued.  One of the ways designed to achieve this is by providing academic tutoring services.  Under the co-ordination of Pat Hoffman, a team of tutors is available to assist children who may be experiencing academic problems or need some catch-up instruction.
This team works actively with our local school, parents and the individual child to overcome difficulties.  Weekly sessions usually are scheduled for one hour at the library after school or on weekends as required.  Training is provided for the tutors in collaboration with the school to assist in developing curriculum objectives.  High School subjects depend on the availability of knowledgeable tutors.
The Learning Centre also has a number of tutors experienced with adult educational needs.  Help with many areas ranging from literacy skills to resume writing is available.
This important community programme has been generously supported by our local Lion's Club providing a bursary fund and a crew of dedicated tutors.  More information on programme availability and costs is available from Pat Hoffman, Tutoring Co-ordinator, at the Library (656 4333).  She is also always on the lookout for additional tutors.  Give her a call!  Our children are our future.

Yard Sale Raises Money for New Health Care Centre
By Roy Allen

On the Sunday of the Thanksgiving weekend the Apsley Easy Walkers held a yard sale to raise money for the new Health Care Facility.  The weather did not cooperate; it was rainy and blustery.  Despite this, members of our community still ventured out to support the sale.  The  day was a success in many ways, working for a good cause and having fun doing it.

To Peggy Downey of Community Care who supported us with facilities, thank you.  To the Easy Walkers; Holly Hilker,  Peter Baumkin, Shirley Rooke, Gerald Watson, Margret Currie, and Shirley Allen thank you for  your  help.  We raised $152.00 for the Health Care Facility.  A BBQ luncheon was enjoyed by all.

Santa's  coming to town!
December 5th at 2:00 PM

The "North Kawartha Food Bank Inc." will be joining  in the fun at the parade and will be collecting donations along the route.

PLEASE be generous and help to make a "Merry Christmas" for those in need!

Thank you for your continued support!

The Chase Is On!

By Pat Hoffman

Once upon a time, on Eels Creek, in Apsley……

First, let me tell you, who’s who in this chase.  There’s Chloe Hoffman, the herder dog,  (2nd alpha female in this home), Bernard Lean, guide-dog-in-training (puppy of Jude and Cecil Lean) and last but not least, Silly Goose, a.k.a. the ‘Apsley Swan’., adopted goose of Jim and Caroline Elder.

Getting the picture?

It all began in Chloe’s backyard.   Bernard had dropped in for a visit. During some rough and tumble play, their leads became impossibly tangled and we finally decided to unclip Chloe hopeful that she would stay nearby to play with her best bud, Bernard.

WRONG!.  It lasted about 20 seconds.  Chloe sensed her freedom, and in breakneck speed, made a beeline for Bernard’s home base.  Yo, Chloe, he’s in YOUR backyard!

No response.  Jude, Bernard and I followed in hot pursuit. We spotted her and she us, her nose sniffed some unseen new friend and she was gone, heading towards the creek in front of Jim and Caroline’s home,…also home to Silly Goose!

goosie

Jude  spotted Chloe first….”Look, there she is, having a swim”.  But Chloe wasn’t alone, poor Silly Goose was being herded and chased up and down the creek in consecutively smaller circles as the herding instinct took over and NO commands or promises of treats could divert this dog.  Silly Gooses’ adoptive  mom, Caroline appeared  on the scene and to her horror, her baby was being chased relentlessly.  Poor Silly Goose, unable to fly, turned on Chloe every few minutes, hissing, spitting and flapping her wings, but to no avail.  Now, we have three women scaling the banks of the creek coaxing and cajoling a dog and a goose.   Bernard was taking it all in and no doubt storing information for future reference.  Jude took Bernard home and returned with a leash. She scaled the banks under the bridge on Burleigh St. where Chloe was finally stranded on some rocks and while clipping Chloe onto the lead, slipped, and scraped her hand.  Sorry, Jude.  Our Hero.  Chloe was taken home in disgrace (for many days), and Silly Goose disappeared for a couple of days and then returned safe and sound to her home and will be looked after this winter by Jim and Caroline.
