Staying Abreast On Chandos By Dianne Michelson Despite a dramatic change in weather from Friday to Saturday and a torrential downpour one half hour prior to the walk, the spirits of the 50 plus committed walkers were not dampened as they headed out on the 4th Annual 5 kilometer walk “STAYING ABREAST ON CHANDOS” (sponsored by the CIBC – Run For The Cure).
The organizers, Judy Franks, Sue Moffatt, Jacoba Dunn, Wendy Sutherland, Marie McKenna and Dianne Michelson were thrilled as the dedicated group of walkers and a few of their four legged friends from Chandos Lake and the surrounding area headed out on a very successful walk. Year after year, the amount of money raised continues to increase. This year the amount of sponsorships totaled $3235.00. Have Raised Close To $20,000
for Breast Cancer Research A similar successful walk in Apsley “ The Ladies of Apsley” organized by Marion Kidd raised an additional $3400.00. In combination, these two teams have raised close to $20,000.00 for Breast Cancer Research in the last four years. Mark you r calendars for 2005 (the first weekend in October) and join us for this very worthwhile event. THE FOX By Neil Currie It was just a slight movement at the end of the hedge about eight feet away as I walked up the driveway but it caught my eye. I stopped and peered through the cedar branches searching. Suddenly I realized that a lovely red fox was looking at me. I started to walk again and quick as a flash it was ready to flee so I stopped. We looked at each other for some moments. Then he sat down - and continued to look. I looked. I called my wife and proceeded to the cottage. He seemed to follow. "They are curious little things," a knowledgeable neighbour told me later. We continued to receive visits from Reynard (Hans Christian Andersen's name for his fox), and we started to feed him pieces of wieners, hoping to earn his trust. He had a beautiful brush and a handsome, alert little face. One night, about midnight, we were awakened by two shots - something between a 12 gauge and a rifle, maybe a .410 shotgun. It struck us both at the same time. The fox? The Canoe Museum in Peterborough is looking for dead porcupines for a Native lady who is teaching about making Native jewellery from porcupine quills, so I phoned the next day to ask if they had ridded themselves of a nuisance porcupine last night. "No. A fox," was the reply. My heart sank. I told my wife whose face wrinkled in pain. "Don't say one word of criticism," I said. "They, their baby and their small dog felt threatened. It's our fault. We should never have fed him. We should never have tried to tame him." Cottage Country Computer Club Elects New Executive

The Computer Club is now in its ninth year of operation and has taken the leadership over the years in many programs relating to computers in North Kawartha. It was largely through the efforts of the Club that internet access was brought to Apsley and members of the club are now working on high speed connections. |
