Save your Back & still do Household Chores
Contributed by Margaret Currieback art

Back pain is one of the most common afflictions of mankind. There is no simple cure, but there are simple ways to prevent you from hurting your back in the first place.
Back pain can be caused by a variety of factors: poor posture, lack of exercise, obesity, ruptured discs, osteoarthritis, tension, emotional problems, and others. Following a few simple guidelines when at work and play will help keep your back healthy and pain free.

1. When lifting, bend your knees, not your back. Lift objects only chest high. Stand on a stool or step ladder when reaching for something. Always be sure of your footing when lifting or reaching.
2. When standing, stand with one knee bent and alternate knees often.
3. When driving, move your car seat forward to keep your knees level with your hips. Sit straight and drive with both hands on the wheel.
4. If working at a table or desk, sit on a chair low enough to place both feet on the floor.
5. Invest in a good quality, firm mattress. If you sleep on your side, bend your knees. If you sleep on your back, put a pillow under your knees.

If you suffer from bouts of back pain, take heart! With proper care, exercise, and time, you will be back on your feet again. Speak with your physician or physical therapist. A diagnosis of the condition of your spine, together with preventive exercise and strategies to avoid back injury will be useful tools for a healthy, active, pain-free lifestyle.

2003 Ontario Volunteer Service  Awards
Sandy Zimmerman

On  Oct. 8th  at the Trentwinds Centre Ptb. 300 people honored.  We were congratulated by government reps. & entertained by a folk singer. It was so well organized, no long waits, no overly long speeches and the refreshments delicious!  There were people who had contributed  50 years of service!  (Primarily IODE and Women's Institute - but that's quite amazing.)  I think the MC mentioned that people in that room had given over 2 million (?) hours of volunteer service.  At any rate, I was most impressed by the whole evening and very thankful to our library for nominating me for an award.

Other notables:
Pat Clunis, John Scott  & Isabel Tucker all for 15 years of service to Apsley Community Care.  Bob and Norma Nash for 5 years to  Community Care and Sandy Zimmerman - 5 years for North Kawartha Public Library.

During spring break, Cubs & Scouts are going on an exciting 3 day trip to Ottawa, visiting museums, parliament buildings, and sleeping beneath a warplane.  To reduce costs, we have several fundraisers: December - Cookie dough & raffle;
January - Bowl-a-thon; February - Spaghetti dinner (with Lion’s Club).

The Scouts were on two camps already this year: Gilroy, with canoeing, compass work, knots, and a floating campfire; our annual camperee at Brookwood with Scouts from all over Peterborough.  We enjoyed the air rifle range,
archery, high ropes, and mountain biking. Our Scout group won the leader challenge. Now we are working on safety and first aid. We welcome new Scouts (10-14) every Wed., 7pm at the Legion.

The Beaver colony  has 7 Beavers now! The fall camp at Gilroy was filled with fun activities: canoeing, songs and a floating campfire. We also had a great sleepover with 29th St.Alphonsus Colony friends in Peterborough.
This month we learn about transportation; emergency vehicles, trucks, planes and trains. If you have any Beaver uniforms, please call Chantal at 656-490.

The Venturers have already been on one camp and are planning another. The Venturers are involved with community events and exciting outings. We welcome new
Venturers (14 –18) every Wednesday, 7 pm at the Legion.

 Community Christmas Paradeclown foto

Sunday, December 7th  will be the day to welcome Santa to the Apsley area. We strive every year to make the parade a little bit better and a little more fun for the kids and we hope this Christmas parade will be the best yet!    We have walkers in costume and fabulous floats that will have the children cheering.  Everyone has done a terrific job in years past but I’m sure you will find the parade bigger and better than last year.  We  need lots and lots of spectators to greet Santa.  So lets all lend our support to this great community event. Please, join in the Christmas fun in Apsley. Special thanks to Wellington Street and the Lions for sponsoring the two bands again this year. Plans are underway to raise the giant Christmas tree in Apsley.  So join us around the tree for hot chocolate and a community carol sing on Saturday, December 6th.

Every Wednesday is Bingo night in Apsley.  Games begin at 7:30 PM.  We invite you to come and bring a friend to this very social event.  Watch for the Christmas Special Games!  On December 10th, the 50/50 game will give back 100% to the winner!  On Dec 17th  the Jackpot game will double - to $200!

Thank you for your continued support of the Lions community projects.

The Apsley Lions wish your and yours a safe and Happy Holiday season!
