Mrs. Jeff’s grade 5/6 class have been enjoying a fascinating unit on flight and the properties of air.  Mrs. Jeff was able to make a connection with Mr. McLeod, a local man with expertise in building and flying radio controlled model airplanes.

Mr. McLeod, a retired teacher, generously gave his time to come into the class to demonstrate elements of flight through the use of model planes. Each student carefully constructed a Rubber Powered Club Trainer provided by MAAC (Model Areonautics Association of Canada).  Students were thrilled with the ‘real life’ use of the theories being discussed in class.  As a culminating activity, Mr. McLeod and Mrs. Jeff’s students took their models to the gym for their flight test.  Planes flew in various directions.  Mr. McLeod showed the students how to add tabs to the rudder and ailerons to improve the flight capability and performance.

During these visits, Mrs. Jeff made an interesting connection involving Mr. McLeod and Apsley students attending Apsley in the mid-seventies.   As a teacher, Mr. McLeod ran an after school club for model planes.  This was a popular activity attended by many students.  One student attending was Mr. Garry Sutherland.  Mr. Sutherland, years later, was principal at Apsley Central School 1974 - 79.  Having such good memories of the fun had with Mr. McLeod at the flight club, Mr. Sutherland ran an after school club for model planes for the students at Apsley.  Many people currently living in Apsley have good memories of this flight club.  It was wonderful to be able to have Mr. McLeod at Apsley and I am sure he was very pleased to discover the connection with the club he started 30 years ago and how it has continued to generate good memories.
