What is Leadership?
by Roy Allen
Leadership is the ability to influence a group towards the achievement of goals.  It is true that good leadership is essential to business, government, and countless groups that shape the way we work, live, and enjoy life.  The skills of motivation, planning,  decision making, positive attitude, listening, etc.; all the valuable tools of good leadership must be present.  Good leadership builds success and harmony. Not all leaders are managers, nor are all managers good leaders.  An organization provides its leaders with certain rights, but their is no assurance that they will be able to lead effectively.  In many cases we find that non-sanctioned leadership, that is, the ability to influence
outside of the formal structure of the organization, is as  important,  or more important than formal influence.  In other words, leaders can arise from within a group as well as being designated.

In conclusion, be careful in your leadership selection; do not covet aggressive, non-ethical leaders that cause disruption.  Your leader must work with his members, not against them.  It is the only way to achieve your goals and have everyone benefit.

The Xmas Bazaar, Nov 1st , was a  successful event. Thank you to  the volunteers who participated prior to the day, and everyone who worked on Bazaar Day.  Several women spent many hours stitching a beautiful quilt.     All the travelers to Niagara Falls had an enjoyable trip.  The tour of the Butterfly Conservatory was a particular favourite.  On Nov 17th, a full bus leaves for Rama to see a show with Don Knotts and Tim Conway.

We are proposing the idea of a craft group, or a craft day, perhaps once a month to start. If anyone is interested, we would welcome your suggestions.  This could be a new project for the new year.

The Annual Xmas Dinner is Dec 2nd .  Special entertainment has been arranged, and we are looking forward to a very pleasant day.  Attendance acknowledgments would be appreciated.. Our regular meetings will commence again on January 6th .

We wish everyone a safe and Happy Holiday.

BURLEIGH ROAD HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Bob Cotrell

On October 14, 2003, the Burleigh Road Historical Society was privileged to have George Wilson as guest speaker. George is an American citizen who first came to the Apsley area in 1948. He told of his experiences both here and in the states.robert pic
As a boy of 10, George's uncle took him to see the wreckage of the
Shannondoah. This was a helium-filled airship that crashed in Ata, Ohio. He showed us a photo of the wreckage as well as a piece of the airship's fabric.
While working at a war plant during World War II, George was put in charge of a strange shipment that had arrived under strict security. He later learned that the materials in that shipment were used in the making of the atomic bomb.
George was once a double for president Ronald Regan. He showed a video of himself as Regan in which his appearance is strikingly similar. He made frequent visits to the White House, attended many gala events, and was interviewed on both American and Canadian TV networks.
In 1948, he decided to locate a quiet vacation spot in Canada that had good fishing. He contacted the MNR offices in Toronto, then decided on Jack's Lake. Along with his wife and two friends, he journeyed north from Ohio. When they arrived at Jack's Lake (via a trail cut through the bush), they were met by Hilliard Dunford. George learned first-hand of the excellent fishing when, while out with his son, he caught a 30lb muskie.
Wanting a permanent vacation place, George purchased a lot from Hilliard and built his cottage. Once, while walking through the woods, George came to a clearing where he saw a large flat rock with unusual carvings. Little did he know that these were the petroglyph carvings which are now a protected attraction.
George and his wife Ann live a quiet life in their home on Jack's Lake. The Burleigh Road Historical Society thanks George for sharing his interesting stories.
