AMERICAN GOLDFINCH Our “Wild Canaries”, slightly smaller than a House Sparrow, are truly beautiful birds - the males with bodies of bright yellow feathers contrasting with their black caps, wings and tails and, although the females have the same conspicuous white wing-bars, they are a dull yellow-olive with only blackish wings. In winter, when it is important for safety reasons to be able to blend in with their surroundings, both sexes are drab coloured. As Spring arrives and the birds start looking for mates, the summer colouring slowly starts to appear and that triggers, as in many birds, the recognition of the opposite sex of their species. Being members of the Finch family tells us that Goldfinches are mainly seed eaters and they have the stubby, strong, seed-cracker bill that all Finches need to crack open seeds. In warm months, they will eat some insects and plant growth. At feeders, they are particularly fond of the high fat/protein of Niger seeds. They have a roller-coaster style of flight, singing “per-chic-o-ree” as they go, making it easy to recognize them when they are flying. Because most do not fly south for the winter, they do not have to rush into nesting and often wait until well into the summer. By that time, thistles have gone to seed - the soft, waterproof thistle-down ready to line their nests and thistle seeds to feed their young. Our Goldfinches, with their lively trills, twitters and “sweet” notes, are certainly a joy to both hear and see.
