The Apsley Bard

The Sighs of Summer

I have seen the forests, shining lakes and green growth 'cross the plains.
While here at home there's sun and heat, out west they curse the rains
Mosquitoes hide from daytime's scorch, here game fish seek the shade
Under overhang, a log or shoal, shunning hook and spinner's blade.
In the bush the breeze is stilled, the salt sweat flows like brine
The deer flies buzz and take their meal from skin that wetness shines
They carve a hole like Flylocks and take their pound of meat, while
We swing and swat to no avail, and curse the bugs and heat.
Out in the west, the grain is sown, but lies dead in a bog
The ceaseless rains make fields of muck through which sad farmers slog
The planter would so gladly trade his wet and drowning peat
To dry and heat the soil and save his flax and oats and wheat.
It's said that we here in the East face discomfort in degrees
With Celsius as our gauge of hell, we pray for just a breeze
To stand knee deep amid the ruins of crops so water-cursed
The farmer wonders how we'd feel if the fortunes were reversed
He feeds a nation and the world from what the ground will yield
He'll watch the sky, the wind and hope that God will bless his field
When hopes are dashed and rain has splashed his work of countless springs
He'll suck it up, and take his loss, accept what nature brings.
So we who listless sit and wish that things would slightly chill
Consider that through sun and heat, we have lakes and breezes still
The one demand that weather brings if we bemoan such things, is that
We suck it up, take summer's spells, and accept what nature brings.
Across this land a nation toils, yet we who stay in place
Will never know the Rockies or our prairie's open space,
We could not know our farmer, our rancher, if we just sat
We have to get up off our butts and go to where they're at.
Oh Canada!
