Local Volunteer Recognition
2005 County of Peterborough
Recognition Awards

by Judy Everett

The 2005 County of Peterborough Recognition Awards were presented on Friday, June 10, 2005 at the Douro-Dummer Community Centre in Warsaw.  Recipients from the Township of North Kawartha were as follows:
Doug May received the Volunteerism Award for his time involved with the Community Care Office in Apsley and the Seniors Group in Woodview.  Doug drives Dialysis patients from Apsley to Peterborough for their weekly treatments through all types of weather.

Lise Post received the Volunteerism Award for her endless hours as fund raiser for the Apsley Minor Hockey Association.  She oversees the snack bar, organizes and runs bake sales, campaigns for donations, and organizes the fund raising dances.  Lise has also been involved in the breast cancer walk, and assists with the AIDS awareness and MS.

Christine Everett was the recipient of the Youth Award.  Christine is always busy assisting the Apsley Skating Club, helping the Apsley Minor Hockey Association with the time clock and Tyke practices, helping with the annual Arnie Brown Hockey School, and is the Chair of the North Kawartha Youth Committee.  She helped to organize and host a Youth For Youth Variety Nite.  Christine organized a Dinner Theatre which was a first for Apsley, and donated the proceeds to the Arena.  This opened the door for the Blackfly Theatre group who now performs shows annually in the summer.

The Heritage Preservation Award was presented to Dr. Sally Rayes.  Dr. Sally helped to organize fund raisers for plaques for St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church and for St. Mary’s Cemetery both of which are the oldest in the former Chandos Township.  St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church was declared a historic site by the Township in 2000.  Dr. Sally also volunteers with the Apsley Lion’s Club and is the current President of the ABC Senior’s Club.

Greg Tucker of Tucker’s Marine was presented with the Business Leadership award at the Township of North Kawartha Council Meeting on Tuesday, July 12, 2005.  Greg has managed Tucker’s Marine for the last 20 years and purchased it in 1996.  Greg and his wife, Penny, believe in supporting their community and have demonstrated their generosity to many events and fund raisers such as:  being a major sponsor to the Apsley School playground equipment, donating kayaks for the Stoney Lake Cottage Park Fund Raiser and the Jack’s Lake Cottage Association Fire Equipment Fund Raiser, and being a major sponsor of the local Hockey School, just to name a few.

All of these recipients help to make our community a better place to live.  (See right for Awards Ceremony photots.)
