Birds and Shooting Stars After raising their families, many of our area birds molt to drab winter feathers while they gorge themselves on plentiful food to have sufficient fat reserves for their trip south. It is difficult to believe that many of the birds we welcomed in the Spring will begin their migration this month. They will travel at a much more leisurely pace than their journey north when time was at the essence to get a territory, find a mate and raise a family. Off the topic of birds is this month's annual meteor storms - Perseid Meteor Showers, the most spectacular and most famous of all annual meteor showers. They begin the last part of July and continue to about August 22. A meteor is a dust particle no larger than a grain of sand which has entered earth's atmosphere. Friction causes it to evaporate in a flash of light and that is what we see. The maximum number of meteors that we will be able to see, will occur the nights of August 11-12 and 12-13, after the moon has set and the sky is dark - getting on to midnight, in the northeastern sky. As the night progresses, the meteor activity climbs higher and higher until nearly overhead and the meteors streak down in all directions. On average, a person should be able to see one at least every couple of minutes - even 50 an hour at a very dark site. A group, watching in all directions, may see 150! Hope you have a chance to watch this wonderful show. Shooting Stars - as the Montreal Planetarium says, don't forget your wish list! |

Take Responsibility for their Lake by Rachel O’Shea, Docktalk Coordinator Chandos Lake property owners have enthusiastically embraced FOCA’s Docktalk environmental program. Over 70 residents and cottagers have welcomed the opportunity to learn about good stewardship practices that are needed to properly care for their shoreline properties. Such practices protect the unique habitats that are crucial for the life cycles of over 90% of the wildlife in and around the lake. Through personal site visits led by Chandos’ Site Visit Guide, Doug Halls, cottagers have received information about how to minimize their human impact on the lake. Participating cottagers are stating that they enjoyed the opportunity to learn how to create long term, lake-friendly living conditions. In August, we will reach the target of visiting 100 Chandos Lake landowners; and the Ontario Trillium Foundation, along with the Bancroft Stewardship Council, are to be thanked for providing the funding for a very successful Docktalk program. |
