Safe Drinking Water Issues The Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) hosted a conference call on Wednesday June 23rd, at 1:00 PM regarding the safe drinking water regulations. The OCC was requesting input and suggestions to be compiled into a comprehensive submission to the government. The Kawartha lakes Chamber of Commerce, Eastern Region was represented in this call by General Manager Scott Papp who represented the concerns of our members as expressed to us in letters and emails over the past months. Also of note, Carolyn Amyotte co-owner 1 operator of Eels lake Cottages & Marina and councillor for the Township of North Kawartha also called in. "With Carolyn and myself calling in, the north-east part of Peterborough and the Kawarthas was very well represented" said Chamber General Manager, Scott Papp. As you may know, the Ontario Government has issued Regulation 170103 under the Safe Drinking Water Act, 2003. It has come to the attention of the OCC that many businesses, particularly those that are small and rural, will be adversely affected by these regulations. In order to comply with the regulations businesses must conduct a variety of testing and infrastructure installments, which many members have said that it would be onerous to their businesses. The Ministry of the Environment has been made aware of the issue and is holding ongoing consultations with key stakeholders over the course of the summer. They recently have pushed back the compliance deadline for small non-municipal non-residential owners but have yet to make any further amendments to the regulations.
