50's Dinner Dance & Library News

50’s Dinner & Dance
by Patricia Carlos

50's dancers     The June 19th  50s Dinner and Dance would be considered by most a very successful event. If I may quote "the music was the nicest I've heard in ages and everyone seemed to enjoy it. The dinner was great from beginning to end."

Thank you for these accolades. Indeed the Continentals and chef Bruce and Roger added to the evening So much so that what we hoped would be a kick-off to a campaign to raise funds for a medical/health centre exceeded itself in expectation as citizens generously donated $19,950.00 that night. Bravo! A good start to the over $300,000. needed to renovate and extend this facility. This added to the $30,000. committed by the Apsley and District Lions and the $10,000. donated by a Ambrose Moran brought the total to just under $60,000.00.

The thermometer posted on the municipal building will denote the success of our fundraising committee headed by Cal Taillefer. I understand future events to take place will include  golf tournaments and a country music dance as a determined community picks up the ball and runs with it.

Getting back to the dance... we had a sit-down meal for 150. The community centre was filled. A wonderful meal of chicken breast and vegetables, preceded by choice of two salads and followed by a variety of decadent cakes was served up, after which tables were removed to afford dancing space. The floor soon filled with dancing couples as the music struck up and Mary Burrbidge began to sing. It took me back to the 50s and later, when all dances attended by Tom and I, and there were many, were filled with dancing couples. It was also fun to see the North Kawartha Country Kickers adapt their line dancing skills to the music of the night and it was fun to see the women wearing poodle skirts and crinolines. And thanks to Yvette and Tony we saw how a rumba was properly danced. A citizen was also inspired to take the microphone and demonstrate his ability. Certainly seemed like a good time was had by all.

Credit must be given to the merchants who helped make this event a success by contributing gifts. And many thanks to my team of enthusiasts who sold tickets, made decorations, prepared the hall and pitched in to assist the chefs allowing things to flow smoothly. more 50's dancers And many special thanks to those citizens who came forward, out of the blue, to help. If I may borrow from someone, “a community that works together sticks together!” Bravo!
