What a lovely day greeted us as we went on the Garden Tour. Our first stop
was “Green Acres”. One would never guess that this beautiful park
like garden was just off Highway 28. Alice and Bill have owned this property
with its 1,000 feet of shoreline on Eels Creek since 1980. Their use of wild
flowers intersperse with domesticated flowers was most impressive. Here she
stands beside her cedar rail arbour.
Our next stop was at Miszuk’s Wilderness job turning the natural glacier dip into a wonderful garden. It took about 4K and a great . Roman & Robin have done a remarkable deal of work to go down to the water table 11 feet and drag up the stones from a derelict basement to create this wonderful place. The pond is stocked with catfish , frogs and many other creatures that come naturally to this place. Robin says she wanted a natural place for their baby Mark age 3 to grow up in. Here she is beside the pond. >>>> White Dog Studio which we have visited on many occasions as we viewed the amazing glass work during the Studio Tours. Sue and Brad named their home after their pet Arcus. Among all the lovely flowers we were most impressed with the use of small branches covered with vines which run from the deck to the ground. Furniture in the Woods. Tim & Debbie have a very active life as her career takes her to Toronto and they also have a cottage on Chandos Lake. I was surprised that they had no problem with the deer eating their flowers since their wolfhounds keep them at bay. Marianne Avery’s garden was the only one we saw at the last Garden Tour. It was a surprise to see they have this beautiful place up for sale as they plan to build on their property at Apsley Lake. She is already transferring plants to this site. Her use of statues throughout is fantastic.
Our last stop was Cedar Grove. Rachel is a talented artist who along with husband Tim manages family, work and the garden. Her favorite place is the rockery falls. |

Community Care Walk-A-Thon
by Roy Allen
On June 17/04, Community Care Apsley held a Walk-A-Thon
to raise money to support their budget. The money allows Community Care
to provide services and programs of the highest quality for seniors and adults
with physical challenges. On behalf of Co-ordinator Peggy Downey, the
Community Care volunteers, and the Apsley Easy Walkers walking club, we extend
our sincere appreciation to our citizens, businesses, and the Peterborough
District Health Council for you financial support and participation.
Your generosity was overwhelming in the raising of $2,575. Twenty-two walkers participated and afterwards attended a BBQ at Community Care. The Walk-A-Thon was a tremendous success and only made possible because of everyone’s assistance and generosity. |
