Declarations for the Office of ...
Janice Griffith announces her candidacy for Reeve of North Kawartha Township.

Janice Griffith

With the complexity of issues that now face municipalities, I feel it is important that there be continuity between one Council and the next.

The current Council has started a number of things that will not be completed by November. In Waste Management we have to get a second transfer station built and operating before we are forced to close our remaining landfill sites.  We have completed preliminary work towards a new medical centre and we need to continue with that project.  This is key to attracting badly needed medical professionals into the township. While we are so very fortunate to have Dr. Rayes, the load keeps increasing and is just too much for one General Practitioner to carry. We were unsuccessful in getting a Nurse Practitioner funded in Year one of the Province’s new program and we need to keep pushing towards success in Year Two.

The Official Plan for the Township has not yet been updated, as it has been waiting for the County Official Plan to be completed first. Of particular concern to me are issues that effect the environment in general and the water quality of our lakes in particular.

With the help of the Greater Peterborough Area Economic Development Corporation (GPAEDC) and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food (OMAF), a start has been made with community meetings to identify and implement appropriate and sustainable economic development. This project is making progress and needs to be continued.

As the Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park comes on stream over the next three years, it will be important that our community make the most of economic spin-offs that this may bring, while protecting the natural heritage and our way of life.

GPAEDC has just received funding for a business plan to get broadband into rural Peterborough County, and we need to be strongly represented at that table.

It is an important time in the life of North Kawartha Township. I feel I have the background and experience to give leadership to the new Council, having spent 25 years in senior management and community work prior to being elected to Council in 1997. At the Township level I have chaired the Finance and Administration Committee, the Health Task Force and Committee of the Whole, and served on the Library Board as well as the Lifelong Learning Centre committee. The past three years as Deputy Reeve have broadened my experience with involvement at County Council and with assignments to represent the County on GPAEDC, Land Division and the Peterborough Housing Corporation.  I ask for your support.

Warren Smith, Councilor of North Kawartha Township, has officially declared his candidacy for the office of Deputy Reeve in the coming November elections. Important projects are coming on board in North Kawartha, such as a possible new/or renovated medical centre and a transfer station. Warren feels his six years as a member of the Committee of the Whole and three years experience as a member of Council would be an asset to the residents of the township. Warren thanks you for your support in the past and looks forward to your continuing support in the coming fall elections.
