Rescue, Eels Creek  at High Falls

Sat. Jun 14, @ 9 p.m., the OPP was requested by the Prov. Ambulance Service  to attend at Eels Creek bridge, Northey's Bay Road, in North Kawartha Township. The O.P.P. was called for traffic control assistance in the event an air ambulance helicopter might set down in the area. Shortly after 9 p.m. an officer arrived to find that an air ambulance helicopter had in fact already landed in a field off Northey's Bay Rd. The helicopter transport staff was standing by in response to a report of an injured canoeist on Eels Creek. Initial reports to the ambulance service had a man going over the falls, sustaining a possible serious injury. This information turned out to be incorrect. The crew from the vehicle ambulance canoed to High Falls, approximately one hr. north of the Northey's Bay Road bridge. The ambulance service also requested Trenton Search and Rescue and a helicopter was dispatched to Eels Creek, at High Falls. It was discovered that a 42  year old man from Aurora had apparently slipped in shallow water at the base of High Falls. The man was apparently showing signs of disorientation and a head injury was suspected. The Trenton Search and Rescue staff repelled down to the man and secured him for transport to the Peterborough Regional Health Centre. The injured man was accompanied on the canoe excursion by his three teenage children. The group was canoeing down Eels Creek and would have just portaged around High Falls when the mishap occurred. The man's children walked on a trail to Northey's Bay Road. There was information provided that alcohol consumption may have been a contributing factor in the incident.

Plane Crash Jack's Lake

O.P.P., together with personnel from both the Townships of North Kawartha and Havelock-Belmont-Methuen Fire Departments, responded to Jack's Lake around 11 a.m. on Sun morning July 13th The reported crash of a Cessna 206 airplane was confirmed. The pilot, 57 year old Ken Williams of the Guelph area, escaped unharmed from the submerged plane and was taken to shore by a boater. Mr. Williams was then transported to the Peterborough Regional Health Centre for treatment of shock. Mr. Williams was intending to land on Jack's Lake near a cottage where a family function was scheduled. He was preparing his decent when the engine quit. Attempts to re-start the engine failed.  Williams glided to the lake surface and the plane did a nose dive. The plane was removed from the lake by a crane and taken ashore where it was removed to the Peterborough Airport.

Drowning  June 25/03

David Laxton, 21, from Scarborough, drowned  while swimming in Loon Call Lake in North Kawartha. The O.P.P.,  Fire &  Rescue Unit, & the Ambulance Service, responded around 12:30 p.m.  to a cottage located on  Loon Call Lake. It has been determined that four persons, one of which was David
Laxton, were attempting to swim across a narrow portion of the lake. Two other persons were nearby in a canoe monitoring the progress of the four swimmers. Two of the swimmers, who have swam the estimated 150 metre distance repeatedly in recent years, advanced ahead of the two other swimmers. The canoeists also advanced beyond David Laxton's location. Laxton had only swam approximately 10 metres from the cottage dock when he became fatigued and told the canoeists that he was returning to the dock as opposed to attempting to swim across the lake with the others. Laxton was unable to make it safely to the dock, and drew attention to himself when he started splashing about trying to keep his head above water. The canoeists turned around and returned to Laxton's location as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, Laxton disappeared beneath the surface. His body was recovered from an estimated 3 ? 4 metre depth approximately 20 minutes later by the canoeists.

Liane Kastely, OPP assisted by one of the canoeists performed CPR on Laxton however efforts to revive the young man failed. He was transported by vehicle ambulance to an air ambulance in Apsley where medical staff pronounced his death.

This was Laxton's only visit to the cottage.  He was a guest at the cottage that has been rented for six consecutive years by a group of family and friends from Scarborough.

There was no evidence of alcohol being involved.
