“Dream like you'll live forever
Live like there's no tomorrow Dance like no one's watching Love like you've never been hurt”
This was Brendan's favourite quote, and summed up how he chose to live his life. Tragically, this ended on January 8, 2006, in an automobile accident in Texas. He had an enthusiasm for life and packed more into his seventeen years than most people do in a lifetime. His parents, Alice and David have owned a cottage on Jack's Lake for 18 years and so Brendan spent much of his summer water-skiing, boarding, participating in the regatta, playing golf and tennis. Family and friends getting together was also important to him as was the paper delivery route and just hanging out. His sense humour and quick smile were a joy to all around him. If you wish to contribute to the memory Brendan, please make donations to The Township of North Kawartha (Re: Medical Centre Capital Campaign), marking on the cheque that it is in memory of Brendan Court. |

NORTHERN RAVENS Sightings were reported of flocks of Siskins and Chickadees, a few Great Gray Owls, Pine Grosbeaks and sizeable flocks of Bohemian Waxwings well into March. However, a Bald Eagle, seen sitting on its nest about February 21st near Young’s Point – 3 weeks ahead of last year – was an announcement that Spring was on its way. Your ears, in February, would tell you that Spring was just around the corner when you heard the wild, wonderful repertoire of “wonks”, “bonks” and “crocks” of the Northern/Common Ravens. You might have been lucky enough to watch as they performed aerial courting displays, tucking in one wing to allow them to tumble, dive, roll, fly briefly up-side-down and perhaps engage in mock fighting – showing complete mastery of the air. The birds become quiet once the 3-5 eggs have been laid, as early as March, in a bulky nest of sticks with an inner cup lined with fur and moss, high up in a conifer or on a cliff edge. Ravens are highly intelligent, proven to be able to count, solve problems and use rudimentary tools. To crack open shellfish, they fly high in the air and drop it on rocks; they may hide part of a meal before eating, in case food is lacking in the future; they will throw something just to hear the noise. To identify them in flight, note that they glide on flat wings, alternating with flapping, whereas Crows seldom glide. Algonquin Park chose the name “The Raven” for the Park’s News Bulletin to honour this bird that epitomizes the spirit of our northern wilderness. Hope you enjoy watching the antics of this clever, resourceful scavenger. |
