Farewell to Friends
Dust to Dust We wend our way to the village spire To quietly say farewell We mix emotions of grief and ire Of a loss to nature's knell We rue the loss of someone dear We're sad that life must end They leave us still with death to fear But with life's joys and tears to tend They lived so well, and death's not vile The comfort words preferred The men in hard white collars smile And say glory's now conferred On whom, we ask does glory rest To die's a fearful thing No psalm makes death a favor blessed Despite the words that ring Of hollow comfort, shallow joy As if in loss we gain A loved one, sister, mother lost Not ere to love again Why can we not feel human rage Be angry when our fellows die Exhaust our sorrow and write the page That asks this God, "Say why!" © 2005 Barrie P.
