Reeve's Update

by Jim Whelan

Renovations and Addition to the Medical Centre:

The plan for the renovated and new section to the Medical Centre was approved at NK Council on Feb. 1st and the tentative schedule for re-tendering is as follows:
Tender Advertising - February 25, 2005
Site Visit - March 16, 2005
Tender Closing - March 30, 2005
Council Approval - April 5, 2005

In consultation with Trevelyan Architects it is felt that if the Township of North Kawartha re-tenders according to the revised plan costs should remain within $350,000.

North Kawartha Medical Centre Capital Campaign:

We have been very successful to date with the North Kawartha Medical Centre Capital Campaign and a big thank you to all who have pitched in to make our fundraising campaign so successful. Pledges received to date amount to $154,387.66. If you would like to make a pledge please make your cheque payable to: The Township of North Kawartha (Re: Medical Centre Capital Campaign). Tax receipts will be issued. Our medical centre has been chosen to be part of the Province wide Telemedical sites and Medical staff at our Centre will be able to access Specialists and Hospitals not only in Peterborough but all over Ontario. Dr. Rayes will also be able to diagnose patients for the Nurse Practitioners in Keene from the North Kawartha Health Centre. Thank you to Dr. Gary Humphries (Medical officer of Health), for his work with the ON Gov’t to bring this technology to Apsley and though it is very expensive there is no cost to the Municipality.

Provincial Downloading to County and Townships:

You have all heard for years that the Province of Ontario is balancing its own books by downloading services to the Property Tax Base. The County and the Township are working on a complete breakdown of these figures and will be taking them forward to the appropriate Ministers to put our position forward.

Community Policing:

We are happy to welcome three new volunteers who were recently sworn in to join the North Kawartha Community Policing Committee.  In addition, the Police Services Board approved funding to install a computer and Internet connection for the Community Policing Office, which will support new programs being developed in conjunction with the OPP.  These new programs are planned to be of benefit to seniors and youth in the North Kawartha community, and they are only limited by the availability of volunteers.  If you would like to be part of this important organization, please contact the volunteers @ 656-4431.

Reeve's Update continued ...

Bear Watch Program:

North Kawartha council have been working with the MNR on the “Bear Watch Program” and MNR just approved funding for 2 new bear-proof collection bins for the new Anstruther transfer station, 3 bins for the beaches and 15 aluminium information signs for beaches, transfer stations, marinas and public access areas in the Township. We will continue to work with MNR on the public information and safety issues in the coming year.

Broadband:

We are putting out a “Request for Proposal” to provide broadband to the village of Apsley and this will be in the papers the week of March 7th. In addition the County of Peterborough is assessing network requirements for the County. We will keep you updated on the results of the “Proposal”.
