| Two people died in separate snowmobile accidents. At 12:38 am on Jan. 18 advised that a snowmobile was reported on fire in the area of Erwin Inn on Stoney Lake. A group of friends had departed the Warsaw area on their snowmobiles around 8:30pm . They attended a cottage on Stoney Lake, then attended Viamede Resort, leaving there around 12:am. Heavy snow fall made for poor weather conditions. They started across Stoney Lake on a marked trail, unknowingly towards a small unnamed island in Gilchrist Bay. They saw the island at the last minute. One driver hit a snow bank and was thrown from his snowmobile. The snowmobile struck a large tree, bursting into flames, and the driver struck another tree. Police, Fire, and Ambulance attended and Jamie Johnson, 20, of Douro Dummer , was transported to P.R.H.C. where he succumbed to severe head injuries. Alcohol may have been a factor. Speed was a factor. The investigation continues. The second accident occurred on Anstruther Lake Sunday morning when OPP were notified of a snowmobile through the ice. Officers attended and were advised that cottage owner Mark Stephens had gone to visit friends the evening before and left their cottage around 1:30am. At 5:30am, Stephens’ wife awoke to find her husband had not returned. She attended the friends’ cottage, and they realized he was missing. They located tracks leading to open water where they noticed a helmet floating in the water. Police, Fire, and Ambulance attended and located two boots, a helmet, and a glove in the water. The OPP dive team was dispatched and after about 30 minutes of searching, they located Stephens, age 43 in approximately 15 feet of water. It appears that he had removed items of his clothing in an attempt to save himself from drowning. Alcohol was involved, speed was not a factor. The investigation continues. Seat Belts / Child Restraint Seats Work - Use Them!
Thurs Feb 12th @ 8.45am Seat belts and child restraint seats may very well have prevented more serious injuries, and possibly death, in a single vehicle collision on Cty Rd # 36 btw Buckhorn and Burleigh Falls. Suzanne Vaughan, 38, was driving a Plymouth Voyageur westbound. She was accompanied by her two sons, 6 year old Colman and 4 yr old Aidan. Both were secured in child restraint seats. As Vaughan entered a gradual curve in the roadway, she lost control of the van. There was a light dusting of snow on the roadway at the time. The van traveled off the road and rolled in the ditch before striking a rock cut. The van came to rest on its roof. The van was demolished on impact. Within a very short period of time, another driver happened upon the collision scene. Derek Bolton, 32, stopped and assisted Suzanne from the van by opening her door. Bolton then opened the tailgate and entered the upside down van. He unbuckled the two children from their child restraint seats and removed the children from the wreckage. Suzanne Vaughan and her two children were taken to the P. R. H. C. by ambulance. The children were treated for very minor injuries. Suzanne's injuries are considered more serious, but not life-threatening. There are no charges being laid. . Collision on Hwy # 28 Sun Mar 14th @5 p.m. Thomas Peter Milton, 53 listed in critical condition at Kingston General Hospital following a serious collision north of Apsley he was with on his daughter Susan Milton 27 both of Newtonville.
