Apsley Band a Go!
by Sandy Zimmerman
band's a go
Ever had a yen to play music with others …  interested in doing something entirely new and different… challenging yourself to learn? Or have you played music before – many years ago… a few years ago?  Interested in playing again? (Our photo is missing four smiling faces – three are on shift work!)
The Apsley band members have been rehearsing since the beginning of February. We learn a bit about music, how to play our instrument, and are mastering the technique of playing in a group.  Most of all, we’re having a good time. We meet Monday mornings from 10 – 11:30 am and new members are always welcome. You need not know anything about music, about how to play a band instrument – nor need you have an instrument.  They can be rented from a place in Peterborough. In addition to playing in the group, there is a one-to-one lesson for beginners at a time convenient for both you and the instructor. Come join us!!  Phone Sandy  656-2745.

Music for Minor Hockey
Story and photos by Chuck Griffith

music minor

It was a happening!!  Sat. Feb 29th from 3pm to late in the evening a number of local musicians performed to raise money for the Minor Hockey Program.

The initial idea of having a music day was Lise Post’s and Lise and Sandy Del Mastro did most of the planning for the event, which raised over $650. Minor Hockey in Apsley has grown from 2 teams in 2003 to 5 teams this year. This growth is due largely to the efforts of two persons, Gary Currie and Drew Barnes, and to the strong parent support for fundraisers..

At the music event approximately 25 musicians performed, all the way from bagpipes to blue grass and from country to heavy metal. The Legion donated the hall for free and the evening was a great success for Minor Hockey.

On Mar 13th  the Minor Hockey organization ran a concert/dance at the community centre. As always finiancial and other contributions are gratefully received and can be given to Lise Post, Sandy Del Mastro or Drew Barnes.

 Apsley Playground Project
by Kim Tucker

Come one, come all and help us build our playground!  In May the Apsley School Parent Council Playground Committee will be installing our new playground.  We will be putting up a play structure with strength building features in the senior yard of the school, a mini-climber with fun features, new teeter totters and a monkey puzzle climber in the junior yard.  We also hope to include a shade structure and a new sandbox in the shape of a boat pending donations of labour and materials.  3-D images of the new playground plan are available for viewing at the school and we welcome you to come and see.  The Playground Committee has taken four bids from reputable playground companies and made our purchasing decisions based on quality and warranty.  After careful consideration Recreation Depot- Blue Imp was recommended and approval was unanimous by Parent Council vote.

We have raised $23,000 to date!  However, we will require an additional $6,000. and your help to complete the playground project.  We are planning a walk-a-thon and plant sale this spring and are confident that we will reach our financial goal.  In order to make the most of our fundraising dollars we are asking the public to volunteer their time and expertise by helping us install the equipment that we have ordered from Recreation Depot - Blue Imp.  Please note that installation costs are equally matched dollar for dollar with the cost of equipment.  If our community contributes to the installation Apsley will have built a beautiful playground valued at $60,000. for our children and the next generation of children to follow.

Key Points:

When?
We hope to install the equipment as soon as weather permits - late April or early May.

What if the school is moved?
Please note that there is no guarantee that our school will be closed or relocated.  Any reconstruction is years away and our children will have the full benefit of the new playground.  The North Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board has offered us assurances that in the event that our school is relocated the equipment will be reinstalled at the Board's expense.

What will we need?
Welders, Carpenters, general labour to shovel, rake, wheelbarrow, etc., heavy equipment such as bulldozers and excavators to move structures & prepare site, trucks to haul sand and fill, donations of graded wood for a shade structure and concrete for several footings.

How can you help?
Contact Kim Tucker 656-1013 or Robin Miszuk 656-9008 and find out where you can help.  We can give you more specific information regarding installation and the required materials needed.  Please add your name to the list of volunteers or donors and we will notify you as soon as we have a fixed date.  This is a great project for a worthwhile cause...  our community's children!
